＊キャンプに参加しながら、
カウンセラーとしての責任や小さい子供との接し方、
日本文化の継承や、子供にわかりやすい日本語会話などを
練習、トレーニングしていきます。

参加費用はそのためのトレーニング費用となります。

日々の活動内容

基本的には野外で一日を過ごします。台風などの悪天候でない限り小雨でもキャンプは行います（雨天の場合には天候に合わせた活動を野外で行います）。ラジオ体操に始まり、おにごっこ、リレーなど体を動かしながら皆で汗をかきます。お昼ごはんを皆で準備します。また工作や日本の伝統的な遊び、縄跳び、ゲームなどを学び、キャンプソングを楽しみます。毎日お友達やカウンセラーと力を合わせながら、集団活動の中から文化や言語に触れていきます。他にもおにぎりを作ったり、流しそうめん、水遊びやちょっとした日本の縁日などを体験します（活動内容はキャンプの時期、開催場所によって異なります）。日本から離れて生活していることで普段は触れることの出来ない日本の夏と言って思いつくこと、また高校生大学生のカウンセラーとの出会いから日本語力を伸ばす、維持することなども目標としています。

ハワイ州以外からの参加者
（現地の宿泊について）

アメリカ本土に在住で夏休みに日本には帰れない、お子様に一人旅を経験させてみたいけれど入国審査などが心配、長年ワシントンDC地区でのオーエンキャンプに参加していた方など、ハワイ州以外からの参加も大歓迎です。

お子様だけでハワイへいらっしゃる場合、人数によっては現地の寮部屋などの提供が可能な場合もあります。ホームステイを希望される場合は早めにお知らせください。こちらでステイ先のアレンジをいたします。

  • 飛行機代は自己負担となります（出発日や利用航空会社の希望が個々で異なるため）
  • ご家族でハワイにいらっしゃる場合の滞在費については、オーエンネットワークの方で負担できませんのでご了承ください。

お子様だけでいらっしゃる場合

  • 空港から宿泊地への送迎
  • 宿泊地からキャンプ場への毎日の送迎

はオーエンの方で担当いたします。

日本から旅行中、留学中の方

休みを利用して日本からいらしている方の参加も大歓迎です。またハワイに留学中で現地の日本語を話す子供たちとの交流を求めている方にも最適です。

参加資格

キャンパー：4歳以上で集団行動が出来ること。基本的に自己管理がきちんと出来、親と離れて他のお友達との活動に参加が出来ることが条件です。

野外で活動するため、安全面を考慮し、日本語での指示が理解できること。日本語環境にいることを楽しいと思えること。

このキャンプは日本人に限らず、日本語が母国語でないお子さんも受け入れていますが、日本語を学ぼう、話そう、使おうという努力や意欲があること、日本文化やマナーを尊重し大切にする姿勢があることやある程度の知識があることを最低条件としています。

またキャンプ中は、保護者の方もこのキャンプは日本語環境のキャンプであることを意識し、キャンプ会場内では日本語でコミュニケーションを取るようお願いしています。

カウンセラーもスタッフも皆、英語を話すことが出来ますので日本語の会話力に制限があっても、一人一人のキャンパー に対しそれぞれのニーズに合わせてしっかりサポート致します。しかしキャンプの方針で基本的には日本語で活動が行われます。space

Daily Activities

Campers spend most of the day outdoors. Unless there is a typhoon or extremely severe weather, camp will continue even in light rain (activities will be adjusted to match the weather, but still held outside). We begin each day with rajio taisō (radio calisthenics), followed by tag, relay races, and other active games to get everyone moving and sweating together.

Campers help prepare lunch, enjoy arts and crafts, learn traditional Japanese games, jump rope, play group games, and sing camp songs. Every day, children engage in group activities that naturally expose them to Japanese culture and language while working together with friends and counselors.

Other special experiences may include making rice balls, nagashi-sōmen, water play, and small Japanese summer festival activities. (Specific activities vary depending on the time of year and the camp location.) Our goal is to help children experience the essence of “Japanese summer,” something they may not encounter in daily life outside Japan, while strengthening and maintaining their Japanese language skills through interactions with high school and college–aged counselors.

Campers also have opportunities to enjoy calligraphy, brushstroke practice, bamboo crafts, karate, arts and crafts, and painting daruma dolls.

**Participants from Outside Hawai‘i

(Local Accommodation Options)**

We warmly welcome campers from outside Hawai‘i—such as families living on the U.S. mainland who cannot visit Japan during summer break, families who want their child to experience traveling alone but are concerned about immigration procedures, or those who previously joined O-en Camp in the Washington, D.C. area.

If your child is traveling to Hawai‘i alone, we may be able to arrange dorm-style accommodations depending on availability. If you prefer a homestay, please inform us as early as possible and we will arrange a host family.

Airfare must be covered by families (as flight dates and airline preferences vary).
Please note that if your family accompanies your child to Hawai‘i, accommodation costs cannot be covered by the O-en Network.

If your child is traveling alone:

  • Airport pickup and transportation to the accommodation

  • Daily transportation between the accommodation and the camp site

These will be arranged by the O-en Network.

Participants Traveling or Studying From Japan

We also welcome children visiting from Japan during school breaks, as well as students currently studying in Hawai‘i who wish to connect with local Japanese-speaking children.

 

Eligibility

Campers:
Children must be at least 4 years old, able to participate safely in group settings, manage their basic needs independently, and separate from parents while joining activities with peers.

Because activities are held outdoors, for safety reasons campers must understand instructions given in Japanese and enjoy being in a Japanese-language environment.

Although the camp is open not only to native Japanese speakers but also to children whose first language is not Japanese, we require that campers show effort and enthusiasm to learn, speak, and use Japanese. They must also demonstrate respect for Japanese culture and manners and have some basic understanding of them.

Parents are also asked to be mindful that this is a Japanese-language environment. We kindly request that families use Japanese while inside the camp grounds.

All counselors and staff members speak English, so we can support each camper according to their individual needs even if their Japanese ability is limited. However, in line with our philosophy, camp activities are conducted primarily in Japanese.

Those who are 12 and 13 years old have a choice of participating as a camper or a CIT（Counselor In Training）. It depends on child’s personality, maturity, and Japanese skills. Please contact before you register.
